5 Tips to Turn a Spring Fling Into a Lasting Romance

From Fling-Worthy to Relationship-Worthy

Flings are fun, simply because they are quick, passionate and exciting. There are no strings attached and few expectations, other than having a good time with someone to whom you’re super attracted. Sometimes, however, you’ll meet someone fling-worthy who may just have the potential for a real relationship, too. Of course, the tricky part is segueing this carefree connection into something more concrete. But it can be done: Just follow these five tips to turn your dalliance into a prospective partnership.

Manage Your Expectations
Of course, not every fling has long-term potential. So, you’ll want to keep that in mind before going to the effort of trying to transform a chance encounter into a lasting romance. If the person in question is adamant about staying single or makes comments about not wanting to be tied down, well, you know your answer as far as whether or not your lovefest has legs for the future. Be sure not to get too caught up in what could be until you’re clear on the reality of the situation.

2. Make a Connection
Get to know the person on a level that goes beyond the physical. Instigate conversation about his or her goals, dreams and passions outside of your time flirting (or, let’s be real here, between the sheets). Ask about their family, what they were like growing up, or who they want to be in the future. By creating an emotional context for your relationship, you’ll be able to build upon a sturdier foundation.

3. Dig a Little Deeper
It’s useful to get some details about where they’re at in life: Did they just get out of a serious relationship? Are all of their friends single? Do they really have time to commit to being a partner to someone else? By asking the right questions—and perhaps doing a little social media sleuthing—you’ll have a better idea of whether this fling can be more than what it is right now. If the person is set to take a trip around the world or move to a new city to start law school, it’s probably not the best time to start a relationship.

4. Keep in Touch
Make it clear that you don’t want to sever ties from this person once your fling seems to be over. Give them your number and once you connect, be sure to send a text every now and then. Show the person you’ve been thinking of them and that you’re interested in touching base. This will open the door for future connection.

5. Show That You’re Interested in More
Sometimes the best thing you can do when there’s something you want in life is to be direct about pursuing it. In this case, be clear about your intentions and what you hope to get out of this fling. If you’re interested in taking things to a more serious level, say so! The worst that can happen is that the other person isn’t interested, and while realizing that may sting at first, it’s always better to be honest and open about your intentions and feelings upfront to avoid bigger disappointments later. Putting yourself out there is well worth it, especially if the person reciprocates your desires.
