How’s Your Day Going?

This question establishes your date’s mood. If they’ve had a bad day, they probably won’t be too receptive to your romantic advances. If they’ve had a great day, they are more likely to be open and receptive to your romantic advances. The answer to this question will also help you determine if your date is an optimist or a pessimist.

Did You Learn Anything New and Interesting Today?

One of the greatest way to connect with another human being is to teach them something new. And even if your date can’t think of anything that answers this question, you can still answer it and impress them. People are attracted to people who make them feel good or enrich their lives in some way. You can accomplish this on a first date by giving compliments and sharing knowledge.

What Do You Do for Fun?

This questions helps you determine compatibility. If your date likes to do some of the same things you like to do, you could be making a love connection. If they like to do the things you hate doing, there’s no love match. You can also see if they are open to trying new things with you. Maybe they have a hobby you’ve always wanted to try.

You can tell a lot about how some will treat you if you pay attention to how they treat their family and other important people in their life. How often do they see them? Do they like spending time with him? Is there a lot of conflict? Is their family intrusive, or do they understand boundaries?

Tell Me About Your Friends

This is a great question to ask because it takes the attention away from your date. You can tell a lot about someone by the people they hang out with. Do they have a large group of friends or a handful of close friends? Are they judgmental or supportive? Do they only have good things to say?

Do You Have Pets?

Some people are cat people. Some people are dog people. And other people like pets with scales or feathers. Find out where your date stands on pets, especially if  you have a pet of your own, or if you are allergic.

Have You Ever Traveled Alone?

Solo travelers are independent thrill seekers. They don’t mix well with homebodies. And they don’t need to be in relationships. They may not be the type of person willing to establish the kind of bond you’re looking for. Maybe they prefer their own company to the company of others.

What is the Coolest Thing You’ve Bought Recently?

What you really want to know is how they spend their money. Do they make large, spontaneous purchases, or are they more frugal. Money is something couples tend to fight about, whether it’s not having enough of it or objecting to how it is spent. This question helps you get to the bottom of their spending habits.

Are You Dating Anyone Else?

You don’t want to invest a lot of time and energy into someone who’s playing the field (unless you are too). And you don’t want to consider commitment with someone who isn’t ready to settle down.

What are You Looking for?

This is another question that gives you a sense of commitment. Are they looking to just have fun or are they dating to settle down. Make sure their relationship goals are in line with yours.

There are some very intriguing question suggestions in this article. I don’t think I would hit someone I was going out with for the first time with all of them at once, but that just leaves topics to discuss on subsequent meetings.

As someone who has not only traveled alone, but who has also moved to foreign countries for extended periods of time alone, I found your assessments of solo travelers to be quite accurate, particularly “Solo travelers are independent thrill seekers. And they don’t need to be in relationships. ”

The key word there being “need.” Want is another subject entirely. 🙂 Many independent travelers do, indeed, enjoy their own company and some travel alone because they have no one with whom to travel and prefer to go on their own rather than not going at all.

Thanks for presenting some interesting questions to ponder.

    Brightest blessings,

For me, the most important question I would ask on a first date is two part : Do you like animals ? And, are you allergic to any kind of pet dander ????

LOL….I own 2 huge Doberman Pinschers, a miniature Schnauzer, and a miniature pot-bellied pig named Petunia.
AND, I manage a no-kill animal shelter that I built and own.

Soooooo….love me, love my animals !!!!! ( And my animals had better love you too…animals are, generally, a good judge of character.)

I’m also involved in placing abused horses and ponies into forever homes as well.

    Dear Mena,

Eric is a professional writer who writes on a variety of topics, bringing various points of view, to us all, thru his articles.

Something for everybody, you could say.
Sometimes I agree with his articles, sometimes I don’t….but I do enjoy the variety of topic he covers, and the various articles give me food for thought and a look at different perspectives.

As far as this article, I like it, it is packed with great questions and ideas….although I think I would spread the interview questions out over 3 dates.

If they say they are not looking for love or marriage because they have been there and done that, please keep in mind that they could always change their minds. Three months ago I met
a young man and he said those words to me. I said, nice to know. He set some boundaries right away but I went in with an open mind. We are still seeing each other on a regular basis and he has recently told me that he loves me. That was something I did not expect to hear. He said well I was not looking for love but things change. If you like the guy, give him some time to see if love finds him.
I like the suggestion on what to say on a first date. That is helpful since no one likes go on an interview the first time they go out with someone. A little mystery is always exciting.

Mr. Leech, you sound like you have lots of experience in the dating scene.
Perhaps, you write dating profiles for a living and are exposed constantly to a multitude of women.
Do you allow one relationship to be over , or do you jump from one relationship to another, because you cannot be alone for very long?

I was not too impressed with your polyamorous relationship article you wrote a while back. You seemed to advocate that a man should have several simultaneous relationships ..harem style.

am very thankful to you all great friends for all your good support all day, pls am feeling lonely so much i need wife partner to settle down, thanks
