Understanding Your Daily Focus

Greetings my Fellow Seekers! Autumn is now upon us and we will soon begin shifting our lives and our focuses inward. We are approaching one of the two times of the year when light and dark, day and night are in balance, which is something that many of us feel is lacking in our hectic, chaotic, day to day lives. In honour of this, our Daily Focus for this week is all about finding that balance and bringing it back into ourselves.

September 21

“Balance isn’t something you achieve ‘someday’.”

Why are we always putting important things off till tomorrow or later? We may know that we need to take care of something and understand that it is important, yet we consistently procrastinate and put things on the next day’s to-do list. Learning that living a life that is balanced is just as important as a work deadline is something that we definitely should try to do. Stop putting off until tomorrow what can be done today so that tomorrow we can enjoy our happy and balanced life. Today’s phrase is To-Do.

September 22

“Life is the balance between holding on and letting go.” Rumi

We horde. We hold onto clothes, pictures, papers, take out menus, even old cassettes and 8-Tracks. We also hold onto outdated responses to stress, to relationships that no longer serve a positive purpose, and to guilt. When we hold on to those things and people that suck our lives and time away from us, we keep ourselves from living. It is okay to think fondly of our pasts and to reflect on what we have learned and how we have grown, but we need to make sure that we find the fine line between reflecting and internalizing. Today’s word is Release.

September 23 (Autumn Equinox)

“Of all the seasons, autumn offers the most to man and requires the least of him.” Hal Borland

Happy Fall! The Wheel of the Year has turned again and we now enter a time of abundance. Thanks to the warmth of the summer sun, the earth now shares her bounty with us: the colours of the season are bold and resplendent, and the trees, fields, and gardens are filled with fruits, vegetables, and other crops. Winter requires us to plan ahead, spring calls for us to plant the seeds, summer needs us to take time to tend to those seeds so that they can come to fruition. Each of them requires much time and effort, but autumn simply requests that we partake in her harvest. To the ancient Celts, autumn was the last season of the year, culminating of course with Halloween/Samhain. So today, take time to reflect on how far you have come over the past year. You planned your goals, planted the beginnings, and lovingly tended to yourself and them. Now is the time to revel in what you have accomplished and enjoy the changes that will come with the upcoming season. Today’s word is Bountiful.

September 24

“Time and balance: the two most difficult things to have control over, yet they are both the things that we do control.” Catherine Pulsifer

How often do you realize that it is 8 o’clock at night and you haven’t completed any of the things on your to-do list? How did the day get away from you? It can feel that you are at the mercy of time rather than it working in conjunction with your will and desire; however, you have control over both time and how you partition it up so that the balance between what needs to be done and what you wish to do is easily distinguished. Start putting what is important TO YOU on the calendar, alongside those important dates already there. You are just as important as all those tasks that need to get done. Make yourself a priority, and in time you will see that finding the balance is easier than you realize. Today’s word is Prioritize.

September 25

“Problems arise in that one has to find a balance between what people need from you and what you need for yourself.” –Jessye Norman

A common thread that seems to come up in many readings is that my clients have always put other peoples’ needs and wants ahead of their own, to the point that their own energy is greatly diminished. We all want to be there for those we love, we want to help them through the rough spots and of course, encourage them to achieve greatness. However, we need to make sure that we are still doing what is needed to keep our batteries topped off. There is nothing wrong or selfish in taking care of ourselves. It is actually easier to help those we love when we have taken care of ourselves first. We must strive to fill our lives with people who enhance them the way we do theirs, and who appreciate the need to care for ourselves sometimes. Today’s word is Self-Care.

September 26

“Balance is a feeling derived from being whole and complete; it’s a sense of harmony.” Joshua Osenga

Another word for balance is harmony. To be in harmony with those around us and with who we are at our core allows us to roll with the punches without having to worry about getting knocked back on our butts. Learning what makes us tick, what fuels us with passion, what depletes us of desire and drive, and what re-charges us are all part of learning how to be a whole person. We are more than just who we are at work, while with friends, or family; we are a complex and amazing creation! We must embrace all of the aspects of who we are, but to do that, we need to figure out who we are in all ways. Start getting to know all the parts of who you are today and then begin to live a full and complete life tomorrow. Today’s word is Completion.

September 27

“A well-developed sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life.” William Arthur Ward

Sometimes life happens and can leave us tired, frustrated, and at our wit’s end. We can deal with it in a couple of ways: we can allow it to stress us out more, we can drive ourselves to exhaustion trying to meet life on life’s terms, or we can allow ourselves to laugh. Yes, laugh. Sometimes we just have to laugh at the absurdity of the challenge, or what life is expecting from us in order to clear our heads and be ready to take the next step. Cultivating a sense of humour can get us through rough and difficult times, and it also can help find those people that mesh well with us. If it makes everyone laugh, then maybe we can help each other through the good and bad times. Today’s word is Humour.
