Why Do Opposites Exist?

In this world, there are opposing forces of nature. We all learned in eighth grade science that for every action there is a reaction – and the same is true for people. According to books like “The Beauty Myth” by Naomi Wolf, if we were all truly happy and content at home, nothing would ever get done, and our evolution would have been much slower.

As humans, we strive for happiness through love, work, travel, and ambition. We all seek fulfillment. If we had no bad days, would we even notice how great the good ones are? We need to have roller coasters to keep life a journey, and to learn the lessons of how to seek fulfillment through experimenting daily. As a new child tests what is hot and cold, so, as adults, we still test and push ourselves to attain our next goal.

If your goal is to be in love and then married, it doesn’t just stop there once the vows have been exchanged. You may go on to want a child, a house, a garden and to build a life together, still wrapped in a tapestry of struggles that everyone faces, but with a partner to back you up. If it were so easy, would there be books and films to fill us with the passion of inspiration and stories of struggle that touch our hearts? It’s the highs and the lows that drive us in life.

When our goals are to be the best at something, we give up the fight once we have won the race. Lance Armstrong went on to win the Tour de France seven consecutive times and was even more driven to do so after being diagnosed with testicular cancer. The mind continues to attack new challenges.

Opposites are necessary to balance life. If we were only attracted to Brad Pitt, then the earth would not be repopulated. There are many different ways to handle the same situation with different outcomes, because we are all unique in our thinking. There are some terrible, unexplainable lows in this world, and with the Gulf Oil Spill and Haitian devastation this year, it would be easy to say the deck is stacked with more evil then good – but it has served to unite people in efforts to make things right in ways that inspire us all. Find the beauty in what you may have thought typically ugly, and your understanding of the world will open up bigger than you can envision.

What can you gain by embracing your own opposite?

I agree with you, Jacqueline. Especially, at least for myself, as long as I know that I did the best I could, with anything in my life, I trust in God and the universe that it will all work out. And it gives me peace. Excellent point….Thanks. Miss Krystal

My parents= polar opposites. even in their features….even in their backgrounds.
and the BIGGIE-one is born dec 13th, the other june 13th….even though both are 13’s, they are exact opposite to the day!!! A blissful marriage…Almost 50 years….Although they do have a lot in common. Both are ex athletes, both love sports-they like to travel, etc.

As far as myself, I tend to do well with men that are type B personalities. I am an A personality…I also do well in my female friendships with women who are a bit more reserved than myself and are excellent at detaching. –

But as far as clients, work is work-and I am a professional. So as my bio says, “Diverse clientele”
which is something I stand by….It doesn’t matter who you are, what you come from, etc. I am here to serve you and help you with whatever your needs are… 🙂

    Loved the article! Fantastic!

    Hi ……Great article Colleen,

Souls only come together, on the earthly physical plane, to learn and grow.

In our dealing with and understanding of adversity, opposition, or differences in others…..whether it is in our love life, or in our work & career life, do we have the opportunity to learn, grow, and , ultimately, evolve spiritually/Karmically.

    Blessed Be )O(

    Very thought provoking article Colleen,

May I add, on the planet positive and negative energies has to exist in order for the planet and mankind to exist it has to have a balance, through balance within our self and with in the planet, its when our life becomes off balance through anger, hatred, guilt, fear through this is when negative things tend to happen more, whatever may be going on in your life to avoid further heart-ache and sadness, let what-ever shows up flow through you, as if it were water not becoming attached to the outcome, trusting that everything always works out, and it really does, but… the more we can let go of attachments the sooner we can be happy and love life. This does not mean that will never get upset or disappointed it just means that we don’t get stuck within it.

As we look around there is so much good, all we have to stop and look around and enjoy!

    Blessings and Big Hugs!

    Lovely article, Colleen!

I agree. We humans require contrast, adversity and variety to keep life interesting, fascinating, rich. We are creative beings always building a better mouse trap and eagerly anticipating the newest thing that improves our lives. Isn’t that what makes us human? Isn’t that the joy of the journey?

Thank you for the inspiring post Colleen. I loved some of the statements you made, they kind of took me back to the lessons I’ve been learning in life. Beauty is all about contrast; it is the balance of the opposites, a wonderful dance, an interplay of dynamic and engaging forces. All of humanity is in the pursuit of happiness. It is inherent in the very essence of their being. The balance they accomplish through all the struggles, the trials and tribulations is what makes life a beautiful experience worth living. Marriage and relationships are beautiful when they incorporate contrast because it helps create an admirable balance and a uniqueness that goes beyond serving the needs for happiness. It engages two people into a constructive and evolving spiral that is always in the pursuit of balance, harmony and happiness. My parents always argued, sometimes about silly things like movies and tv shows, I’d get so worried because their strong differing points of view and debates were so heated and passionate. I used to think they’re arguing over nothing and fighting with each other again. And then I’d be amazed to find them back together watching their next movie. The truth is their contrasting points of view and emotionally charged arguments let them explore not just themselves but also each other. It let them create new growth and push the emotional, intellectual, mundane and spiritual boundaries of their relationship. It let them strike a beautiful balance filled with contrasts and they’re always endeavoring to take it to a whole new level. All relationships need to be tempered with compromise, tolerance and understanding. It helps create the controls that can steer you and your partner in the right direction. In all this you’re right in saying it takes love, sincere effort and commitment to embrace your opposite. But the rewards, the growth, the experience and the dynamics are beautiful, fruitful and unique to each every such relationship. My parents have been married for the last 35 years and it still seems like they’re marriage is fresh at heart, alive and young as ever… filled with partnerships in business, adult love, puppy love, romance and all sorts of fun experiences.

BTW Brad Pitt came into California with 300$ in his pocket, worked selling ice creams and modeling for cigarettes. I know people don’t pay attention to the struggles when they get so caught up in all the glamour. Its true fortune favors the brave esp. Actors who can look ugly and handsome as and when the directors tell them. If you study the biography of Lance Armstrong another all time great athlete who trains so hard and has an incredibly superior and unique technique, you’ll see that more than the discipline and strict regimen it is his passion for life that fueled his success. His struggles with cancer only reiterate this truth. These are not just qualities we can admire but we must strive to incorporate them in all aspects of our life especially in the way we think and approach our relationships.

    – Keep up the good work Colleen
    – Blessing and Peace
