What is the 13th Zodiac Sign?

The 13th sign of the zodiac is Ophiuchus, the serpent holder. This constellation is not used in predictive astrology, though some say it should be.

When Myth Meets Mythology

Ophiuchus, “the serpent holder,” also known as the 13th sign, was the constellation in which Asclepius was placed by Zeus after Zeus killed him. Poetic as the ancient gods were, Zeus gave Asclepius his due even in death—after all, Asclepius was the half-mortal son on Apollo who was raised by Chiron, the wounded healer. He also gave birth to many children whose names we associate with good health and clean living. With all of its empathic and healing qualities, as told in the midst of this back story,  it’s a wonder that when astrologers divided up the sky into 12 even pie pieces and named them after constellations, they overlooked this particular constellation.

“Astrologers can identify the energy flows of two people, when they will match-up and when they won’t.” – Psychic Alison ext. 9885

The truth is that Ophiuchus was and still is a recognized constellation. It was in the second century when the astronomer Ptolemy wrote about it, and it is still a constellation—one of 88 constellations we recognize today. Ophiuchus lives between Scorpio and Sagittarius.

They Don’t Write ‘Em Like That Anymore

So as you may be able to tell from having the truth spelled out for you, just like a good Hollywood drama, there’s obviously more to the story than meets the eye. It all goes back to the days of ancient Greece when astronomers and astrologers played nicely together, and when astronomy saw the logic in astrology’s decision to divide the sky into 12 equal, predictive sections based on the Sun’s path. Newton and even Galileo recognized the merit to this. Today, however, that friendship has seen better days. Once in a blue moon, an astronomer will take note of the shifting constellations to say that astrology has changed, and there is a 13th sign. Funny how modern astronomers don’t recognize astrology anymore, that is, until they can come up with their own sign.

Tropical vs. Sidereal

Constellations themselves don’t have equal terrain nor permanent stations like states and countries do—they change and shift over time like living entities. They’re seen and then not. So when astrologers looked for an accurate way to read the stars they decided to follow the path of the ecliptic—the Sun’s path through the sky in relation to the tropics. They divided the sky equally into 12 parts, 30 degrees each, forming the zodiac. The zodiac we follow here in the Western world is known as the Tropical zodiac, and the Sidereal zodiac is followed by Hindu or Vedic astrology.

Western or Tropical astrology is based on the Earth’s position to the Sun and the planets within our system. Vedic or Sidereal astrology is based on the Earth’s position to the Sun, the planets, and constellations. While Ophiuchus is a constellation, it is not a constellation used in predictive astrology. So is there a 13th sign? According to both schools of astrology, the answer is no—just 12 signs that are a few degrees off from each other. Astrology is interpretive, so we can believe what we want, but this writer is not buying it.

“If we take advantage of what astrology has to offer (new moons for beginnings, full moons for contemplation, rest, rumination, etc) we will, in essence, be taking advantage of the vibrant energies around us.” – Psychic Charrmayne ext. 5058

Dear Darla – if you’re turning 50 you may be feeling your Chiron return – it happens to us all – you’re probably in for some changes coming your way soon – a move, a job change or a change in relationship status – hope that helps you – as for being Aquarian – you’re still an Aquarian and always will be … find out what your rising sign is too and read horoscopes for both signs – always. Other than that, if you really want to know what’s going on with you personally, I’d suggest you contact a psychic or astrologer – I can’t help you without knowing your birth info – so they can give you more immediate answers you seem to want.
    thanks,
    LJ

Ans to Keav born on Feb 19… All depends on the details you omitted.. The location, plus the year and exact time of your birth. Being on the cusp actually requires all of that inforation to be sure of your actual sign. You certainly can claim a blending of the signs Aquraius and Pisces. I am An Aquarian born Feb 18 at 11:50 pm Sun was at 29 degrees 57minutes. Very close to Pisces but it’s amazing how much I embody Aquarian traits. Emotionally, I reflet my Pisces Venus- I cry at sad movies, commercials etc, but my gut reactions to real life events are more Aquarian. (eg Mr Spock ) oriented!!

It is written, at the time of Christ, and preserved in the annals of Theosophy, that at the birth of Christ, there were thirteen Astrological Signs. This is indicative of the Dhendera Zodiac in Egypt. However, Pisces and Virgo, until the birth of Christ, were one constellation. This is when they split into Virgo and Pisces.

The Egyptians (Magi), believed that one’s Astrological sign was an indication of their Karma; the kind of Karma that would help in surviving one’s death. For example: It is said, if thou art a Pisces; thou hast been reborn under every astrological sign and has not yet, (and it’s a last chance), to learn how to survive one’s death. Conversely, Virgo is not a virgin. Virgo is a new soul born to Earth. Another example of misconstruing the vital lessons in Astrological Karma is Gemini. Often quipped as “two personalities,” could not be farther from the truth. I never met a Gemini or someone involved with a Gemini who did not immediately understand and validate the meaning of the twins in Gemini, vis-à-vis; the tendency to go to extremes.

Lastly, that is what Astrology is all about. Tendencies and influences. For example: One’s Sun sign is their innate qualities their potential; good or not good, in other words their tendency. One’s Rising sign works from without to within and in represents, influence.
