I am worried about a job that I have held for almost five years. Ever since we bought out another company, cuts have been made and just this past year huge management cuts were made and hours have been slashed. I am wondering if the company will go under before long. I am tired of hanging on by a thread and wonder if the company will ever be able to survive and come back again like it used to be.

I won't wait until the end but just wondering if the company will be closing their doors before long? I am worried about how I will pay my bills and haven't moved in with a boyfriend yet let alone talked about it, so I am worried about how I am going to keep afloat and keep a roof over my head.

Dear Michaela,

It doesn't look like the company you are working for is going to go under, but it also doesn't look like you have a bright future working there, either.

Even though the company itself will survive, more cutbacks and restructuring are planned for the future. Things are going to continue to be rough and scary for the next six months. The real problem is, even though the company will improve, those improvements don't seem to be beneficial to you. Things are never going to be like they used to be.

The best time to look for a job is when you have one, and before you need one. With the economy and industry in this current state of upheaval, the sooner you start looking at other options, the better off you will be. I would strongly advise you to start working with a headhunter or a service for placement. I see you going through testing that will identify your strengths and skills, and that will be very beneficial to you in deciding what your next professional step will be. I see that you will opt for some kind of training that will help increase your marketability and earning potential.

You have some time to think things over and form a plan of action, but I would like to encourage you to use this time productively. While you eventually will move in with a boyfriend, I don't see that happening until sometime next year.

Worrying about what is going to happen and how you will manage isn't going to secure your position, or stop things from being so stressful. Developing a "Plan B" and looking at all your options will help you realize that you're not at the mercy of your paycheck, you can be in charge of your life.

Good luck!
