A recent article in the Ashville Citizen Times out of North Carolina makes a really great point. Here it is, stated simply: if you organize your belongings, you'll organize your life. And an organized life will allow you a sense of peace.
Sounds silly to those who don't place much value on order, but let's face it. There's an endemic condition in the Western World: we've all got too much stuff. Many of us are straight up pack rats to one degree or another, and even those who maintain a certain degree of order feel overwhelmed by clutter at certain times. Particularly at this time of year. However, by the acquisition of a few clear, plastic boxes, you can make your life more manageable.
The holiday season leaves most of us out of control. Over the last few months we've acquired more weight, more mess and more belongings that we either purchased for ourselves or recieved as gifts. Think of all the things you could put away and forget about for a while - and how much time would be freed up from your overworked, overstressed mind if you did so.
Think this sounds crazy? The urge to organize is so prevalent at this time of year that the January consumer storage spree is now an event on the retail calendar. On the day after Christmas, while we consider clearing the presents from under the tree, store shelves get rid of the holiday hub bub to make way for the Sterilite and the Rubbermaid. And it makes good sense.
While buying something to store something else may seem silly to some, it solves a problem with not that much effort. It's a mind over matter thing. As Jaimee Rose writes for the Citizen Times "If we had the boxes, we actually might organize the photos, which means we actually might have mental peace, which is everything."
Contain your stuff and you'll contain yourself. It's that simple. While it won't cure all your problems it's certainly a start.
