You've probably heard about the body-mind connection. What it says is this: you become what you think and feel. This phenomena is what explains why, for example, thinking about a muscle while exercising it, trains it better. On a grander scale, this is the reason that convincing yourself of something (say your own inability to find love for instance) causes it to occur. The good news is, you can change the way you think, and change your life!

It may surprise you to learn that the body-mind connection is not some "new-fangled" thinking, but rather finds its roots in the ancient science of Ayurveda. Ayurvedic principles dictate that the source of every disease is in the mind. In other words, whatever happens to your body is a direct reflection of what's going on in your head. For instance, depression drains the body while joy breathes life into it. Likewise, when you're motivated you feel energetic, but when you're not, lethargy sets in. According to Ayurvedic reasoning, if your mind is congested, you'll be constipated. And if you're unable to process your emotions you'll experience digestive issues.

Ayurveda itself comes from the teachings of the Upanishads, the ancient Vedic text used by Brahmin, which pre-date even Krisha and Buddha in the realm of "Eastern" thinking. The Isha Upanishad states that following one's conscience is the permanent cure for every disease. By nourishing our self-respect, self-trust and self-confidence, we are able to unleash will-power and determination, and ideally, summon the healing forces we inherently hold within ourselves. Naturally, this can apply to healing our situations.

A recent article in an Indian newspaper notes, "When the choice is between the highest good and mere pleasure, we often choose pleasure and cannot reach the real state of contentment and stillness of the mind hence, various diseases follow."

We can apply the same reasoning to our living situations. If a situation is comfortable or habitual, but not benefiting your highest good, choosing to remain in it will only strengthen the problem. This goes for your dating, relationships, family patterns and work. When something is making you feel badly, the solution then, is change. Whether abandoning the situation, altering your approach or simply changing how you think of it. Take note however, that a change that does not alter your perception will only result in recreating the situation until your lesson is learned.

Within us is the cause of everything that happens to us. This does not mean you're always to blame for your problems, but it does mean that it is only you who can create your solutions.

The body-mind connection means you can change the way you feel - about yourself and the world around you! Isn't that good news?
