Did the stars predict a split?

With more than 25 years in the public eye as a singer, songwriter, actress, film producer and pop icon, Madonna is an outstanding example of the creative power of Leo, her Sun sign. Leo also rules romance, and Madonna has had her share of well-publicized relationships, including her four-year marriage to actor Sean Penn and an affair with actor Warren Beatty.

In December 2000, the "material girl" settled down and married English film director Guy Richie, a Virgo with whom the world had hoped she found true love. Sadly, the couple couldn't withstand the Saturn and Neptune challenges presented to them in 2008 -  filing for divorce in October. Saturn is the planet of karma and practicality. Its transit through Virgo is a heavy, stressful weight on the couple's Virgo placements.

Born on August 16, 1958, Madonna not only has Sun in fiery Leo, but Venus and Uranus as well. Venus indicates your love style. Venus in Leo says Madonna is passionate, warm-hearted and generous with those she loves. She also craves attention - woe to the man who ignores her and expects to keep her heart. Madonna also has a flair for details and analysis, as indicated by multiple Virgo placements that include the Moon (emotions), Mercury (mind) and ascendant (sense of self and appearance). Any planet near the ascendant has a dramatic effect on the chart. So with Moon on her ascendant, Madonna is very emotional by nature. Also, being a mother is important to her because the Moon represents maternal instincts. She has a daughter by her former fitness trainer/boyfriend, Carlos Leon, a son with Richie and an adopted son from Malawi that they both adopted in 2007.

Undoubtedly, the Virgo placements between Madonna and Richie are what brought the couple together. Born on September 10, 1968, he has Sun, Jupiter, Pluto and Uranus in Virgo. All four of these placements are near Madonna's ascendant, which says he has a profound effect on her life. Additionally, Richie's Sun in Virgo shines its warmth and creativity upon her Moon and Mercury in Virgo, and therefore energizes her emotional nature and ability to communicate. And the Uranus and Pluto influences, which represent change and transformation, indicate Madonna's sense of self was changed forever when he came into her life.

As for Richie's love and communications styles, he has Venus and Mercury in Libra, the sign known for artistry, cooperation and fairness. Venus represents what he likes in a woman, so he certainly appreciates Madonna's artistic talents. Madonna's Jupiter, the planet of benevolence, is in Libra, which has an uplifting influence on Richie's heart (Venus) and mind (Mercury). And his Jupiter in Virgo on her Moon, Mercury and ascendant uplifts the communications and affection between them.

Richie's Mars in Leo has a passionate connection with Madonna's Sun and Venus in Leo, a delightfully combustible combination. Madonna's Mars in Taurus gives her a practical streak and revs up her earning power. It also indicates she likes a man who is grounded and, well, an earth sign (Virgo, Taurus and Capricorn). Actually, depending on his time of birth, Richie has Moon in either Aries or Taurus, and a Taurus Moon would make him a double earth-sign. 

The split
Even with all that is compatible in their charts, the heavy Saturn-Neptune influences have forced the couple to take a realistic assessment of their relationship - and of themselves. Additionally, Neptune, the planet of "divine discontent" and fantasy, is opposing Madonna's Sun and Richie's Mars. Disillusionment and deception have seeped into their relationship via Neptune. Perhaps Madonna's relationship with baseball star Alex Rodriguez, another Leo, is an example of this (she was named in his divorce earlier in the year). This influence is probably clouding the couple's judgment, so it's hard to say if the decision to split is a good one in the long run. Fortunately, the compatible ties between them will assure a harmonious outcome for their relationship, whatever form is takes.

Madonna's daughter, Lourdes, has Sun and Mercury in Libra, which connects with Richie's Venus and Mercury and her mother's Jupiter. And Lourdes has Venus in Virgo, which is a loving connection to her mother's Moon and ascendant and Richie's Virgo planets. The couple's oldest son, Rocco, has Sun, Mercury and Mars in Leo - he's a spitfire! Plus he has Venus in Virgo, connecting him to his parent's numerous Leo and Virgo placements. And David is a Libra like his sister, so he, too, is astrologically connected.
